Today’s Shoot

It was great to finally get back to filming today. The weather was beautiful, and the temperature was comfortable. I had to change my original plan for the scene, though. I wanted to get some footage of the couple walking up to the ticket booth at the theater downtown to get tickets for a movie. Unfortunately, the theater would not give me permission to do this. Although the first manager I spoke to agreed, by the time we were ready to shoot the scene another manager came out and told me I did not have permission to film without contacting the corporate office first. I get it. Corporations are very careful with their image and branding, but it’s still frustrating. I’m not making this film for financial gain. It’s not a television show or a major motion picture. I was going to be careful to not film any employees during the scene. Anyway, we decided to get some footage of the happy couple walking around downtown and admiring some of the sights. This means I’ll have to make some more changes to my script, but that’s okay.

This was the next to the last flashback scene to be filmed. I plan to film the last flashback scene at a restaurant, but I’m going to call or visit the restaurant way in advance to make sure it’s okay to film there. Since it’s a local restaurant and not some big chain, maybe they won’t have a problem with it.

Each scene I shoot puts me one step closer to finishing the project. I’m thankful for every little bit of progress.

Back in the Swing of Things

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but there really hasn’t been anything to post. I took a break from filming for a few months. The last scenes I shot were in the fall, but then I had to put things on hold. A lot happened in the last few months of 2016. My father passed away in December after suffering from dementia. For the first half of this year, I needed to take some time to adjust to my “new normal.” Now I’m ready to start filming again.

I’ll have to make some revisions to my script. Unfortunately, due to a change in office staff, I am no longer able to use the model apartments at my apartment complex for some of my scenes. Although that is disappointing, it also presents a creative challenge for me as I think of ways to re-envision those original scenes.

I had planned to shoot a scene today, but one of my actors is ill. Maybe we can try for next weekend. I’m excited to get back to it!

It Happened

Things just didn’t work out last week, but this evening I was finally able to begin filming my movie! I was able to shoot one of the flashback scenes. The weather was good, and everyone was available. I’m excited to see how the footage turns out, but with this I won’t have quick results. I have to send the film off to have it processed. I know that’s old fashioned, but that’s kind of what makes this so fun. In these days, when things are so instantaneous, it’s nice to do some things the way they used to be done. It’s hard to believe, but it actually happened! This project is moving forward!

It’s Really Happening

I’m so excited because it looks like my project will finally get started! My script is mostly complete, my actors are ready, and it looks like we are all set to shoot the first scene of my short love story tomorrow. My only concern is the weather. The forecast is not good. If it rains or storms, or if it is too cloudy, we will have to reschedule for another day. Right now it doesn’t look promising, but I’m still hopeful. Maybe the weather will surprise us tomorrow.

Even if we aren’t able to shoot tomorrow, I’m glad I have made enough progress to get this close to actually doing some filming. For that, I am thankful.

My First Film Project

Before 2014 comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to update this blog. I’ve been meaning to blog more often, but I ended up putting in on the back burner. Blogging’s not the only thing I put on the back burner. I had to delay starting my film project.

I had hoped to have a short film shot, edited, and ready to submit to a film festival or competition this year. Unfortunately, I had to delay my project. Actually, I had to delay it much longer than I expected. Hopefully, I can start the new year off right and begin filming in January. I have now cast the leading lady, but I need to make sure my leading man is still available. My project is a short love story, and it will be shot in black and white. I’m excited about getting started.

I will keep you posted with updates about my project. Hopefully, I will be able to post more updates in 2015.

Hi! I’m Jason. Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog. I’m really excited about sharing my experiences as I learn more about making films with a Super 8 movie camera. I want to create short films for submission to Super 8 film festivals and contests. I will be posting my progress here, as well as sharing anything interesting I find about Super 8 filmmaking.
